Passport Requirements for Cruise Trips

passport and visa requirements for cruises

Is a passport required for your upcoming cruise? There are many factors that will determine if you are required to have a valid passport for a cruise. However, according to the U.S. Department of State, any time you leave the U.S. borders, you should be holding a valid passport. While many cruises may not technically need a passport, there are circumstances that can arise that you will wish you had your passport.

Passport Requirements for Cruise Trips

Most cruise companies now highly recommend or require that all travelers hold a valid passport for their cruise, even if the cruise is a ‘closed-loop’ cruise. What is a closed loop cruise? A closed loop cruise is a cruise that leaves and arrives back to the same port. So while technically you may be abroad, you may not actually need a passport. However, if anything happens- you get sick, your ship has mechanical trouble, or you need to catch an emergency flight home- you will NEED a passport.

Simply put: you are safer with your passport than without it. The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) requires that hold a passport or other document that proves identity and citizenship when entering the U.S. You may want to have a passport book or a passport card, regardless of your cruise type. The passport card is only valid for travel by land and sea, to Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. If you need to catch a flight, the passport book is required. The passport book is valid for all forms of international travel so it is often recommended over the passport card.
